Thanks

Thanks to our friends at independent booksellers across the country The Elegance of the Hedgehog has reached eighth place on the nationwide independent booksellers bestseller list. Independent booksellers have been hugely supportive of Europa Editions from the very beginning, but all of us here would like to express our special thanks for their efforts on behalf of the Hedgehog.

We'd like nothing better than to take a long road trip across the country to thank each and every bookseller and store manager personally. Alas! The next best thing is a virtual tour of the country making online stops at booksellers' mentions of the Hedgehog that have caught our attention.

Shaman Drum (Ann Arbor): "funny and heartbreaking realities ... makes for a redemptive and satisfying read."

Robinsons Books (Mornington): "each of the women has that ‘elegance of the hedgehog’: on the outside, she’s covered in quills, a real fortress."

Porter Square Books (Cambridge): " The enthralling international bestseller."

Book Group Buzz (from Booklist online): "In a bourgeois apartment building in Paris, we encounter Renée, an intelligent, philosophical, and cultured concierge who masks herself as the stereotypical uneducated “super” to avoid suspicion from the building’s pretentious inhabitants."

Quail Ridge Books & Music (Raleigh): "Intelligent humor, fine sentiments, an excellent literary and philosophical backdrop, good taste, sophistication and substance."

Book Shop (Santa Cruz): "a novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us"

Chapters Bookshop (Galax, Virginia): "A meaning of-life book."

Rakestraw Books: A Readers Recommendation

Garcia Street Books (Santa Fe): Eva's Pick

Bay Shore Books (Oconto, Wisconsin): "a major bestseller in Europe."

Book Soup (Los Angeles): featured on the Book Soup blog >>

R.J. Julia Booksellers (Madison, CT): "In an elegant Paris apartment building inhabited by bourgeois families. Renee, the concierge, is witness to the lavish but vacuous lives of her numerous employers."

McNally Robinson (Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Ontario): "We are in the center of Paris."

Book People (Austin): "The novel explores authenticity, human connection, psychology, aesthetics and idealism, drawing on the ideas of Kant, Husserl and William James. More than just a dry philosophical novel, though, Barbery tells a touching story of romance and friendship with moments of real humor and emotion that will appeal to anyone that has ever felt different."

Tattered Cover (Denver): Goodread

City Lights (NYC): "The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery is a funny and touching story about two women in hiding."

Blue Willow Bookshop (Houston): "This is a book to savor. The alternating voices of Renee, 54-year old concierge of an upscale Paris apartment building, and Paloma, precocious 12-year old resident of said building, together tell a story that is a treatise on the meaning of life, the obligations of the highly intelligent, and the importance of friendship."
