“It is often helpful to read perspectives that you disagree with. I am highly sceptical of the merits of ‘degrowth’ as the solution to inequality, poverty and environmental sustainability—but French economist Timothée Parrique articulates one of the more detailed arguments for it... Parrique highlights how GDP is a flawed measure of economic progress, and that its focus on marketable resources means it fails to sufficiently account for wellbeing and ecological capital. This is a widespread critique among economists, but his exposition of it is particularly clear and engaging... And unlike most anti-growthers, Parrique does set out what a new economic system and refreshed democratic architecture might look like... You may disagree with Parrique’s polemic, but it is still a worthwhile read.”
